Cows are bad for the environment. Their diet, grass, causes them to release methane, the same gas that comes out of cars when they burn fuel. A possible solution to this problem is cow backpacks.

These backpacks collect the methane from the cow in to a sorta storage unit. One cow in one day can produce enough methane to power a small refrigerator for 24 hours. We can also use this methane for cars. Since cars use methane to make then go, we can use the collected methane to power our cars. You may think that it’s still releasing the methane, but it’s not releasing both our gas and methane from cows, only the methane from cows. The only problem with this is that they are made with plastic. It’s just a start but maybe in the future they will be made of plant based plastics that are better for the environment.

BOTTLED WATER TEST

We took a blind water bottle taste test. We learned that each water had a different taste. Eld’s favorite water was Fiji, djean1121’s was Dasani, and goldenpumpkin360’s was tap. Also we learned that everybody knew what Fiji tasted like. We think that it is not worth it to buy the bottled water because you can just drink tap water and save money. After we tasted the water we had energy bites and bananas. They were low waste snacks and good.

How Does Plastic Pollution Affect us?

Plastic pollution can affect us in two major ways.

  • If you love animals…
  • and your health

So, lets first talk about loving animals. They can die because of your pollution. Sea animals most often mistaken…

  • plastic bags for jellyfish
  • and other bits of plastic for their food

Plastic and other bits of garbage can harm land animals and us. Not just sea animals. There is basically a cycle.

The 🎈(plastic) is eaten by the 🦐 who is eaten by a 🐑who is eaten by a bigger 🐟 then is eaten by another yet larger 🐠 who is cooked and prepared for us to eat.

Now that balloon you threw away is now in your stomach. Try to use less plastic and if you do recycle!

Turtlely Awesome Pudding🐒

At one of our girl scout meetings we acted like we were sea turtles and tried to pick out gummy worms (cut up) from the vanilla pudding that we died blue (supposed to be green). The gummy bears acted like plastic bags and the gummy worms acted like the real jellyfish. We had 30 seconds to try to find the gummy worms using our spoons. In the pudding we also had sprinkles and mini sprinkles that acted as other plastic in the ocean.

So, what about these turtles and whales?

A sea turtle can weigh as much as a water buffalo. They don’t have teeth. Blue whales can be weighed as much as 25 elephants and it’s tongue weighs as much as much as a an African Elephant. In Indonesia only 5% of turtle hatch lings make  it to sea. Some Loggerhead turtles swim as much as a third of the world to find food. Sea turtles, when searching for food, can mistake plastic bags for jellyfish and eat them and die. Sponges and shellfish that are found on coral reefs are eaten by Hawksbill turtles. Lights along many beaches can distract turtles from the shore. Whales are oily and smelly (very). Whales have whiskers. The temperature of a human is about the same as a whale’s.

About Us

We are a girl scout troop in North Central Indiana. We are doing a bronze award project about plastic pollution in water. Our troop feels strongly about animals, the environment, and we want to keep them safe. This website is so other people, like you, can learn about the dangers of plastic pollution in water (ppw).
